Using Free WordPress Themes – Pros and Cons

It is important that the blog design matches well with the content. In choosing between free WordPress themes and premium themes, you may think that premium ones are better because you are paying a lot for it.

However, there are bloggers who will agree that it is not always about having a paid or free theme. But if you are seriously considering about having a free WordPress theme, then you must know about its pros and cons:

Free themes Pros:

  • You pay absolutely nothing for using it
  • You can start building a blog in an instant

Free themes Cons:

  • Some free themes are not SEO optimized so you cannot fully monetize the blog
  • It does not have updates
  • Limited customer support
  • You get very limited customization options
  • Plenty of other blogs may use the same themes

The best way to ascertain the decision of whether or not you are going to use free WordPress themes basically lies on where you want your blog to be headed. As per experience, free themes are good only for personal blogs who doesn’t get to have so much audience. The choice of design primarily lies on the owner of the blog and he may not care about what other people may say about it.

But the same can’t be said for corporate and other “professional” blogs. The owners always factor the readers’ opinions about the whole look of the blog. This is why corporate blog owners often pay premium for customized themes because they want not only the best design but more on making the theme a perfect representation of their company. Free WordPress themes can make any blog look nice and polished but its limitations make it difficult for bloggers to fully customize it.

In a way, free themes are great especially when you want to explore WordPress and its possibilities. But a premium theme should be a priority as soon as you decide to take your blog to new heights.

I love the free themes as it makes it easier to get the ball rolling rather than having to either build everything yourself or pay someone to do it. I’m currently working on a major revision of my own, and it is time consuming, but long past due!

Free themes are wonderful to dabble a bit around and get started. I went with free themes for over a year and changed them frequently until I figured out what worked best for me. I wrote down all the things I wanted and did not want and paid someone to make a theme for me based on that. It’s a brilliant way to figure out what works for you.
